SEO MarathonEntrepreneur Magazine asks the question “Is SEO dead?”.  The answer is a solid NO!

Savvy small business owners are learning to avoid the SEO snake oil and stay focused on the 3 pillars of a sound SEO strategy.  An article we wrote back in 2010 is still applicable today (Search Ranking Lessons from the Tortoise) – SEO is a marathon, not a sprint.

1. Content

By far the most important component for SEO is content. New content should be added to your site on a regular basis and should be relevant to your audience and key phrase(s). A good rule to follow is if your visitor will be happy with the content, so will search engines.

2. Links

Inbound links from high quality sites help search engines feel confident that your site and content is trustworthy.  Stay away from paying for links or websites that list dozens if not hundreds of links (link farms).  The goal is to write content that is so awesome that other website want to link to it.

3. Social Media

I’ll admit it.  I feel like social media is just another burden I have to keep up with, but I shouldn’t feel that way.  Social media extends your reach and is another indicator to search engines that your content is trustworthy and relevant.

I hope you noticed that SEO starts with awesome content.  So set aside some time each week to write one article/post that your visitors will find relevant.

Writing about the benefits of redesigning your website feels a little self-serving, but let me share some benefits of a website makeover.

Make it Mobile

It’s clear that mobile usage will continue to grow at an amazing rate, so making sure your website works well on mobile devices is a must.  Just a few short years ago, being mobile-friendly required creating a completely separate website just for mobile devices. Today, responsive designs incorporated in WordPress themes allow your website to automatically detect a mobile device and adjust it’s layout.  No separate mobile site or extra cost.

Update Technology

Website technology is constantly changing to provide a better user experience and to keep up with the latest browsers.  As your customers become more internet savvy, they’ll expect the same experience they’ve grown accustom to at large site like Amazon, Fox News, CNN, Facebook, etc.

Add New Stuff

Adding new functionality, like a photo gallery, to an older website can sometimes be problematic.  The new functionality can look out of place compared to the old site layout and design.  Many new WordPress themes already include the new functionality, so it’s often a better investment to do the redesign.

Embrace Social Media

Like it or not, Social Media like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc, is here to stay.  New themes incorporate social media, making it easy for your visitors to share, pin and tweet your pages and content.

Improve SEO

SEO in the past was an afterthought.  Designers and developers focused on the technical and esthetic aspects of your website.  Today’s website designs include SEO from the start and include it in the core of website technology.  I’m not saying a redesign will move you to #1 for your keywords, but every improvement certainly helps.

Update Your Look

What you thought looked great 3-4 years ago might be looking a bit tired and dull.  It happens to the best of us.  Shake things up by giving your site a makeover and include any new logos, colors and marketing ideas.

A well-designed website is one your most effective marketing tools, so take advantage of that by keeping it fresh, easy to use and easy to maintain.

A redesign is more affordable than you might think.  You’ve already got the content, logos, navigation, products, etc, so it will almost always cost significantly less than a new website.

How to Write Better Headlines for Your Website and Newsletter https://www.frogtownwebdesign.com/2014/01/25/write-better-headlines-website-newsletter/ Sat, 25 Jan 2014 18:27:58 +0000 http://www.frogtownwebdesign.com/?p=1840 Writing a great headline doesn’t come naturally for most of us. Here are 5 best practices for creating compelling headlines for your website, newsletter and emails.

Writing a great headline doesn’t come naturally for most small business owners, including me.  Here are some best practices for creating compelling headlines for your website,  newsletter and emails.

Be Active

Using a active voice is much stronger and more compelling than passive voice.  Here’s an explanation from the University of Wisconsin:

In a sentence written in the active voice, the subject of sentence performs the action. In a sentence written in the passive voice the subject receives the action.

Active: The candidate believes that Congress must place a ceiling on the budget.
Passive: It is believed by the candidate that a ceiling must be placed on the budget by Congress.

Active: The dog bit the man.
Passive: The man was bitten by the dog.

Be Clear

You’ve got one shot to grab the readers attention.  Don’t muddle the message with several ideas.  Keep your headline clear.

Be Concise

Keep your headlines as concise and crisp as you possible can.  Get rid of fluff and filler words and use numerals instead of spelling out numbers.  I try to keep headlines from wrapping to a second line, but sometimes that can’t be avoided.

Be Intriguing

Create intrigue to encourage your readers to want to learn more.  Ask a question, tease with an idea, define a list, create a ‘how to’.

Constant Contact Local ExpertBe Direct

Speak directly to your reader (‘you’) instead of some faceless third party (‘they’).

Finally, know your audience.  You know your readers and clients better than anyone, so write with a voice that can speak to them, engage them, and encourage them to act!
